alberta trails

Whether you’re a Linden local or driving in from Calgary for a weekend adventure, one question always pops up: “Where are the best bike trails near me?” At Cal’s Cycle, we live and breathe the Alberta trail system. From the quiet gravel backroads of Kneehill County to the iconic mountain passes of the Rockies, our province is a cyclist’s playground. To help you plan your next ride, we’ve broken down the best scenic routes by skill level—along with the safety tips you need to ride with confidence.

🟢 Level 1: Easy & Family-Friendly

Perfect for: Casual weekenders, kids, and those testing out their first E-bike.

1. The Legacy Trail (Canmore to Banff)

This is Alberta’s most famous paved pathway for a reason. It’s entirely separated from vehicle traffic, making it incredibly safe for families.

  • The Vibe: 22km of stunning mountain peaks and crisp alpine air.

  • Pro Tip: Park at the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trailhead in Canmore and ride toward Banff. Feeling tired? You can hop on the Roam Public Transit (it has bike racks!) for the trip back.

2. The Red Deer River Valley (Edmonton/Central Alberta)

If you’re near the capital, the North Saskatchewan River Valley offers over 160km of maintained paths.

  • The Vibe: Lush greenery and hidden city views. It’s mostly flat, making it the perfect spot to test out a new hybrid or cruiser from our shop.

🟡 Level 2: Intermediate & Scenic Explorers

Perfect for: Fitness enthusiasts and gravel lovers looking for a “half-day” adventure.

3. The Dinosaur Trail Loop (Drumheller)

Located just 35 minutes from our shop in Linden, this 48km loop is a “must-do.” You’ll ride through the heart of the Badlands, crossing the Red Deer River on the historic Bleriot Ferry.

  • The Vibe: High-contrast scenery with hoodoos and canyon walls.

  • Expert Advice: This route gets hot in July. Pack extra water and ensure your tires are at the right pressure for a mix of pavement and light gravel.

4. Glenmore Reservoir Loop (Calgary)

A classic 16km loop that offers a great mix of paved paths and gentle hills. It’s the perfect mid-week training ground for those living in the Calgary area.

🔴 Level 3: Advanced & “Bucket List” Climbs

Perfect for: Roadies and mountain bikers looking for a serious challenge.

5. Highwood Pass (Kananaskis)

At 2,206m, this is the highest paved road in Canada.

  • The Window: Ride it between May and June 14th before the road opens to cars. You’ll have the entire highway to yourself—just you, the mountains, and the occasional grizzly (bring bear spray!).

  • The Challenge: Expect a grueling climb, but the descent is pure magic.

6. Canmore Nordic Centre

For those who prefer dirt, this is a world-class mountain biking destination. With technical single-track and steep climbs, it’s where Alberta’s pros go to train.

🛠️ Safe & Seasonal: The “Cal’s Cycle” Way

Building a community means looking out for one another. Here’s how we stay safe on Alberta’s roads:

  • The “Pre-Flight” Check: Always perform an ABC Check (Air, Brakes, Chain) before leaving the driveway.

  • Wildlife Awareness: If you’re riding in the foothills or mountains, bear spray is non-negotiable. Keep it in a holster on your bike or a jersey pocket—not tucked away in a backpack.

  • Visibility Matters: Our prairie weather can change in a heartbeat. We recommend always using a daytime running light (front and back) to stay visible to motorists on rural highways.

  • The Alberta Season: Our “prime” season is May through October. If you’re riding in the shoulder seasons, watch for “black ice” on shaded path sections and dress in layers!
